Haa Spring Festival
Haa is a beautiful highland valley, known for harsh climate but rich culture of nomadic existence in the country. The altitude ranges between 2600m and 8500m above sea level.
Tourism in Haa was sporadic and stumpy in numbers of late, despite it’s enriching beauty. In other words, it was one of the least explored destinations for tourists.
Only in 2012, when the government took the leap to expose the valley stuffed between Indo-China borders more to tourism. Consequently, the Haa summer festival was introduced as a tourist attraction theme and number of tourists picked up by manifold. The festival is now called Haa Spring Festival and celebrated in the month of April.
The festival has a combo of traditional, cultural and nomadic lifestyle to offer. In brief, much of its popularity has to do with the mouth-watering treat of Bhutanese cuisines and liquor, personal experience of traditional sports, the sensation of religious performance, dances, songs, artifacts, and natural alpine flowers. Visitors are presented with an opportunity to be a part of the highland society.
The highlight of the Haa Summer festival is the display of the rare White Poppy (Meconopsis superba), the flower that is endemic to Haa and not found anywhere else in the world.
The Nub-lang, the indigenous, rare and unique breed of cattle in the country also gets a stage at the festival. In past, Nublangs are symbol of wealth and still today it is prized for their strength and dairy production.
Legend has it that Nub-lang first emerged from Nub Tshona Pata, a lake perched on a terrain close to China and the lake is open for trekking. The lake has several fascinating myths and tales that relate to treasure discovery. Some treasures still can be found at various temples and dzongs in Haa and neighboring districts of Paro.
Photography competition, strong men competition and mountain bike race are some of the modern concepts introduced at the festival.
Haa valley is also known for home-stay program for tourism purpose, where tourists have can relish the blend of modern amenities inside a traditional home and experience the Bhutanese farm life.
